The first shloka revolves around King Dhritarashtra asking Sanjaya about the whereabouts of the Pandavas and the Kauravas in the battlefield of kuru-kshetra.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच - King Dhritarashtra said
धर्मक्षेत्रे - In the place of pilgrimage
कुरुक्षेत्रे - Kuru-kshetra is a place where the battle or fight took place
समवेता - assembled
युयुत्सवः - for fighting
मामकाः - my party(people from my side)
पाण्डवाश्चैव - and the Pandavas
किमकुर्वत - what are they doing?
सञ्जय - Sanjaya
Sanjaya was the disciple of Vyasa deva, therefore he had the divine power of seeing what has been taking place in the battlefield right from the palace as Vyasa deva had given him this boon.
So King Dhritarashtra asked him to inform about everything that is been taking place on the battlefield. He asked Sanjaya that what is happening in the religious place of Kuru-kshetra where the Pandavas and Kauravas have been assembled for fighting.
